The City of Amsterdam has recently approved Port of Amsterdam’s new Strategic Plan 2021-2025, setting out the port’s strategic choices for the next four years. The main objective is to be a leading European port in the green transition.
In Amsterdam, emissions from the port and industry account for approximately 18% of total Amsterdam CO2 emissions. Port and industrial companies (both within the port area and elsewhere in the municipality) are responsible for approximately 920 k tonnes of CO2 emissions, more than half of which come from AEB Amsterdam.
We are committed to helping companies in the port area reduce their emissions to zero by 2050. The intermediate target is a 55% reduction by 2030. In view of AEB’s special position in the realisation of this task, intensive cooperation with the City of Amsterdam is necessary. To this end, we are investing in infrastructure for the transport of sustainable energy carriers, enabling the transport of CO2 and making hydrogen available. In addition, we are expanding existing facilities for shore power, strengthening existing electricity facilities and extending solar panels in the port.
In order to realize this ambition, Port of Amsterdam is pursuing seven concrete objectives, divided over three strategic choices:
1. Let customers, cargoes and activities grow more sustainable.
2. Make the shipping process smoother, safer and more transparent.
3. Develop a future-proof port complex.
Goal 1 – Strengthen competitive position and retain market share: The port will maintain its 8% market share in Northwest Europe by growing 20% in the segments of alternative fuels, building materials, logistics, agri and circular.
Goal 2 – Grow in non-fossil turnover: The port’s non-fossil turnover is 65% of total turnover.
Goal 3 – Ensure that virtually all shipping arrives and departs on time: At least 95% of all seagoing shipping departs from the port and arrives at the port on time.
Goal 4 – Grow in storage capacity for alternative fuels: 12.5% of the storage capacity is used for alternative fuels.
Goal 5 – Going for more circular process industry: Circular activities are growing by issuing 25 ha to circular process industry.
Goal 6 – Reduce CO2 emissions: The port industry, shipping industry and Port of Amsterdam together will realise a CO2 reduction of 10%.
Goal 7 – Create space for development: The port is creating 45 hectares of development space for the transition to a sustainable economy.
After our coal decision in 2017, where we indicated that we no longer wish to tranship coal in the port after 2030, this strategic plan takes us a step further, by setting concrete goals for alternative fuels and non-fossil revenues. This way, we are actively steering towards a sustainable port complex with ever decreasing CO2 emissions. At the same time, this ensures we will remain a strong player in Europe, which connects us to the world and makes us an important economic factor,
…said Koen Overtoom, CEO Port of Amsterdam.
