Polar Code high on the agenda on DE 54 next week
The IMO sub-committee on ship design and equipment (DE) will meet for its 54th session next week, 25-29 October, in London. BIMCO will be represented by the Marine Department.
DE will be reporting to the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) and the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC).
The agenda is rather comprehensive and many important safety issues will be dealt with. Sixty-eight papers have been submitted regarding:
- Development of a mandatory Polar Code; A new mandatory Polar Code will be applicable to ships navigation in Arctic and Antarctic waters and it is expected that it will be finalised in 2012.
- Pollution prevention including a proposal regarding mandatory training of crew.
- Watertight doors on passenger ships. New regulation on doors being closed or open during passage is on the agenda.
- Protection against noise on board ships, where mandatory legislation and acceptable noise levels will be discussed.
A brief report on the outcome of the meeting will be published shortly afterwards, and a full report will be released as soon asan official report is received.
