Malaysian Petronas oil company announced that will set in operation its second floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) platform in 2020. Construction is under way for PFLNG2, which is expected to enable liquefaction, production and offloading of natural gas in the Rotan field, 240 kilometers off the east Malaysian state of Sabah.
Specifically, the platform is going to have a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum, according to Reuters. Petrona’s first FLNG facility (PFLNG1) in east Malaysia, made the company the first one to produce LNG from a floating production unit, last month.
The company’s Vice president also announced to local media that Petronas is currently negotiating with several third parties, who want the floaters in their locations. The cost of the development is unknown, but it will be lower than this of the first one.
The facility will be stationed at Kanowit of East Malaysia for five years. Other companies as well are developing FLNG production facilities in the area, such as Royal Dutch Shell and Japanese Inpex.
