Peel Ports Group, UK’s second biggest port operator, will apply air traffic control technology to a commercial port group in the UK for the first time, in order to enhance maritime operations.
The technologies to be used include vessel identification and tracking, solid-state radar and weather stations. Supporting control operations and smaller satellite operations will be administered in all of the company’s port network. The new package of technologies will exploit a new online booking system and a inclusive program for people development.
According to Peel Ports Group, the air traffic control technology was proven in the airline sector, as well as at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s National Maritime Operations Centre.
The technology to be implemented is expected to provide a more resilient and safer service, in line with Peel Ports’ future growth plans, David Huck, deputy chief operating officer at Peel Ports, was quoted as saying.
The marine operations will be managed from a new command center at the company’s headquarters, based in Liverpool.
