The President of the Republic of Panama responded after Donald’s Trump inaugural address on 20 January, where Trump vowed that the US would take back control of the Panama Canal.
The President of the Republic Panama, Jose Raul Mulino expressed on a statement that the Canal is and will continue to be under Panama’s control with respect of its permanent neutrality. President Mulino also highlighted the Torrijos-Carter Treaty importance, stating that for many years, since 1999, Panama has managed and expanded the Canal to serve international commerce, including the United States of America.
Furthermore, Jose Raul Mulino called upon the legal right to protect the Treaty and underscored the need for dialogue, in order to clarify the issue without undermining Panama’s right, sovereignty and ownership of the Canal.
Donald Trump on his inauguration speech also repeated his promise to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, and signed an order to withdraw the US from the UN’s Paris climate agreement.
