There is currently no danger of an oil spill incident
THE OCEANIC POWER, a Panamanian registered vessel, ran aground approximately 1.6 miles south of Lime Cay about 4:45 hours on Thursday, while being towed out of Jamaican waters by the Tug “North”.
The “OCEANIC POWER” a “dead” ship was being towed in moderate to rough sea conditions when the towline broke and the vessel drifted unto the reefs on Jamaica’s South Coast. The tow was en route to New Orleans.
The vessel was the subject of recent interventions by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, in the interest of the welfare of her crew who have since been repatriated. Ownership of the vessel was also changed while in Jamaican waters.
The current weather conditions are delaying the start of salvage operations. There is some fuel on board the Oceanic Power roughly estimated at 3,500 litres of marine diesel an undetermined volume of heavy oil is believed to be contained in at least one double bottom tank. However there is currently no danger of an oil spill incident.
