To accommodate LNG customers, the Panama Canal Authority is reportedly considering modifying slot allocations and conducting surveys to identify their needs.
As Reuters reports, top LNG exporters have raised concerns about lengthy waiting periods at the Panama Canal and lack of priority passage for LNG vessels. The canal administration aims to address these issues, possibly by guaranteeing crossings for LNG vessels and increasing slots for LNG producers after completing studies and reaching consensus with involved companies.
According to Reuters, key industry players are expected to hold talks in Panama soon to define parameters and discuss aspirations for dedicated canal usage.
Amid climate change-related water shortages, the Panama Canal has proposed building water reservoirs, pending government permits. President-elect Jose Raul Mulino intends to expedite permit processes upon taking office.
While reservoir construction could finish by 2030, securing permits and community agreements remain priorities. Furthermore, the canal also plans to update its pricing scheme to reflect water scarcity and customer needs, Reuters notes.
