The Code on Noise Levels on Board Ships
Shipowners and operators can look forward to a quieter future with a new code that rules that certain types of ship must be built with less onboard noise.
The Code on Noise Levels on Board Ships which was recently adopted by the IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee says owners must fit noise-measuring equipment, acoustic insulation in accommodation areas and hearing protection – all in the interests of crew health.
The Code, most of which is compulsory, will pose a technical challenge to designers but will not apply to smaller vessels under 1,500 gt or pile-driving vessels and pipe-laying barges as excessive noise is part of their daily function.
