Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) has placed a $3.08 billion order for 14 dual-fuel methanol-powered container ships.
The vessels, each costing approximately $220 million, will be built by two Chinese shipyards, Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering and Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering, with nine ships constructed at Dalian and five at Nantong. These 18,500 TEU vessels are scheduled for delivery between Q3 2028 and Q3 2029.
They will be equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol and conventional marine fuels, supporting OOCL’s green initiatives and customer demand for low-carbon logistics.
This move is part of OOCL’s broader fleet modernization strategy. Since 2020, the company has ordered 29 ships from the same builders, including seven 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel vessels in 2022.
