According to Reuters, a fire on an offshore platform operated by Mexico’s national oil company Pemex resulted in the death of at least one contractor, with two others reported to be in critical condition.
In particular, nine workers were injured in a fire that occurred on 6th April 2024, on Pemex’s Akal-B platform in the southern Gulf of Mexico, which is a major location for Pemex’s oil production.
Out of the nine individuals injured in the fire, five were employees of Pemex, while the remaining four were contractors from local service providers Diavaz and COTER.
As informed, the Akal-B platform is situated within Pemex’s Cantarell complex, which consists of aging yet important shallow water wells. Presently, this complex produces around 200,000 barrels per day of crude oil. However, twenty years ago, it was one of the world’s leading oil fields, producing over 2 million barrels per day.
Pemex’s statement did not provide specific information on the impact of the incident on oil and gas production from the complex.
Furthermore, in July 2023, a fire tragically resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals at the Nohoch Alfa platform in the Bay of Campeche.
To remind, in 2021, five workers were killed and six injured in another fire on an offshore platform in the southern Gulf of Mexico operated by Pemex while in 2020 three workers were injured in yet another Pemex fire.
