The Vietnamese-registered general cargo ship,Vimaru Pearl, with 21 crew members was transporting rice to the Philippines while it suffered a gas leak. The toxic fumes killed one worker and three of his colleagues were hospitalised, local media reports.
The ship was expected to arrive in the Philippines on February 14 afternoon. However, on February 13 at 2.30pm., it sent a signal to the MERS 999. About 40 firemen armed with the necessary equipment from the Lintas and Sembulan stations rushed to wait for the ship’s arrival at the Tanjung Lipat Port.
When thevessel arrived, the firemen discovered that Hoang Van Chuyen, 33, had died while the other three were very weak.The three injured were rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) 1 by a waiting ambulance where their conditions are reported to be stable.
The firemen later decontaminated the ship and ended the operation at 7.10pm.
