One crewman died and 14 other are reported missing, after the Dominica-flagged hopper dredger ‘JBB Rong Chang 8’ capsized off Parit Jawa, Johor State, Malaysia, Malacca Strait, in the morning hours of Wednesday, 21 March.
The 2016-built dredger, owned by Malaysian Rong Chang Shipping SDN BHD, was en route from Singapore to Telok Ramonia, sailing in western direction, when it capsized with 18 crew onboard.
Three crewmen were reportedly rescued, while 14 remain unaccounted for, most probably trapped inside the capsized dredger, according to international media sources.
The exact causes of the incident are yet to be revealed. Malaysian maritime authorities were alerted at 8.50. A search and rescue operation is underway.
