On 14 February, the oil tanker SEAJEWEL suffered explosions while docked in Savona, Italy.
The vessel’s crew reported hearing two loud bangs, which were followed by a noticeable concave deformation in the ship’s hull. According to the port authority, the crew had halted the oil unloading operation just before the explosion occurred.
As reported, an investigation into the cause is ongoing, but no definitive answers have been reached yet. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or environmental pollution.
Moreover, the damage to the hull is located below the waterline, and the fish kill in the vicinity suggests the possibility of an external explosive device being involved. The Savona Coast Guard has launched an investigation, but no official updates have been released yet. A diving team from the Italian Navy has also been deployed to assist.
