On May 14, bad weather broke an underwater pipe leading from the National Oil Company (ENAP), causing a slurry oil spill in Quintero Bay.
One month later, the Oceana Chile team found many oil “pieces” moving through the seabed as a sticky mass, trapping and dragging marine organisms such as the marmola crab, bivalves and gastropods, algae, and more. More than 1,400 tons of material was removed. Currently, the final amount of spilled oil is unknown.
