Authorities continue to refine a salvage plan for the grounded car carrier Golden Ray in St. Simons Sound, Georgia, as a small oil leak has been observed in the shoreline, according to the latest update from the Unified Command.
Small shoreline impacts are spotted near Quarantine Island, Lanier Island, Bird Island, and the confluence of the Back, Mackay, and Frederica Rivers, the Unified Command informed.
Meanwhile, response crews, including approximately 208 people and nearly 40 vessels, removed approximately 4,350 gallons of oily water from the Golden Ray’s engine room.
The responders are currently conducting air and water tests inside the vessel as crews are making preliminary plans to start removing oil from tanks onboard the ship.
The Marshall Islands-flagged car carrier, carrying 4,200 vehicles, capsized and grounded on September 8 in St. Simons Sound, Georgia, soon after departing the Port of Brunswick with 23 crew members and a pilot onboard.
All were rescued, including four crew members who spent more than a day trapped inside the vessel.
