Overcoming challenging and barriers, the Ocean Cleanup brought the first batch of ocean plastic to shore following their first mission to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which will be transformed into products, then sold to contribute to the funding of the project. Thus, DNV GL was selected to ensure the origin of the plastic debris.
DNV GL has collaborated with the Ocean Cleanup for 18 months, implementing requirements and verification processes to enable consumer trust and transparency, in the burgeoning ocean-plastic market.
The goal of the Ocean Cleanup has been to turn plastic into usable products, proving to be another challenging endeavor for the organization.
DNV GL’s role will be to provide additional transparency to the project by confirming that the plastic collected from the ocean and then turned into products is 100% coming from the ocean.
Boyan Slat, Founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup highlighted that
To bring transparency to the market, we asked the leading certification body DNV GL to launch a standard, to certify that ocean plastic is actually 100% plastic taken from the ocean. DNV GL followed every step of ocean plastic and will continue to do so, to be able to confirm if the plastic in our products truly is 100% coming from the ocean.
To achieve its responsibilities, DNV GL has developed specific requirements and verification steps that enable the highest level of traceability and clarify how ocean plastic is defined, bringing transparency to this rapidly-developing market. Additionally, the requirements will assist interested parties to ensure the origin of the plastic, making them trust the product.
