ΝYK will supply fuel ammonia at the end of May to an NYK-owned ammonia-fueled tugboat (A-tug) scheduled to be completed in June.
NYK plans to supply fuel ammonia to the A-Tug, a ship nearing completion at Yokohama port, via an ammonia lorry by the end of May, potentially making it the world’s first truck-to-ship ammonia fuel replenishment. Additionally, a fuel-supply agreement was announced between Shin Nippon Kaiyosha and JERA for regular ammonia fuel supply after the A-tug’s completion, a significant advancement in the marine transport industry’s adoption of ammonia fuel.
On April 10, at Sea Japan 2024, an international maritime event, an announcement was made at the “GI Foundation for the Development of Ships with Domestic Ammonia-Fueled Engines” booth. Key attendees included Yuichiro Kato from JERA Co., Inc., Hiroshi Adachi from Resonac Corporation, Takeshi Kato from Shin-Nihon Kaiyosha, and Osamu Shimada from Tokyo Power Technology Ltd.
To remind, last December, JERA, Resonac, and NYK agreed to study the supply of fuel ammonia for ships. They have since been working on safe operation methods, a system for ammonia transportation and reception in ports, and lobbying for rules related to the supply.
