NYK carried out a trial use of biofuel made from waste cooking oil onboard a bulk carrier in Singapore.
The biofuel supplied to the NYK Line’s “Frontier Jacaranda” came from waste cooking oil in Singapore, and this initiative aims to contribute to the circular economy while creating a supply chain that is close to domestic production.
The establishment of the regular use of biofuel, aims to reduce GHG emissions at the Port of Singapore. Moreover, the Japanese government has announced that it will reduce GHG emissions by 46% compared to the 2013 level by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and is promoting a shift to marine fuels from heavy oil and light oil.
Furthermore, in October 2020, the Toyota Tsusho Group, which also took part on NYK’s trial, started supplying LNG to ships using Ship-to-Ship bunkering for the first time in Japan, and has been focusing on efforts to switch to alternative fuels for ships, such as the first trial of biofuel operation by a marine fuel supply ship.
