Cargo-owners are cooperating in the BICEPS Network to promote the adoption of innovative processes, in order to establish sustainable and affordable logistics chains with better sustainability performance of carriers.
To speed up the implementation of innovation, BICEPS collaborated with logistics partners, such as ports, forwarders and solution providers, with the newest partners joined being Port of Rotterdam, Agility Chemicals, Shell LNG Marine, We4Sea and Neogrid.
Relevant partners as Port of Rotterdam and global forwarder Agility Chemicals join the BICEPS Network to strengthen their activities in their common ambitions to contribute to a sustainable shipping sector.
“The shipping industry has to drastically lower its CO2-emissions in the years ahead. As Port of Rotterdam Authority we want to play an active role in this. The BICEPS Network offers a great opportunity to collaborate with cargo-owners to accelerate this part of the energy transition,” Eric van der Schans, Director Environmental Management, Port of Rotterdam, noted.
Agility Chemicals tries to build greener supply chains. The collaboration with BICEPS will enable the company to reduce emissions Howard Sellers, Vice President Europe, Agility Chemical Logistics, added.
Solutions providers are joining BICEPS Network to suggest ways for a faster realization of a more sustainable logistics chain within shipping sector.
Furthermore, alternative fuels are crucial for the shipping sector to reduce GHG emissions. This will take time and effort but is justified by the adoption of cleaner and affordable energy for powering ships.
In this context, Shell LNG Marine became a partner with the BICEPS Network to share knowledge and explore with all chain partners what the best strategy and steps are to be taken for shipping sector to facilitate the transition to cleaner fuels.
“Shell believes it is crucial that the industry collaborates to accelerate the widespread adoption of LNG as a marine fuel. We believe the BICEPS network are the right partners for us in the journey towards a cleaner future for shipping.” said, Lauran Wetemans, General Manager, Shell Downstream LNG/LNG Fuel
Moreover, IT and cloud-based technologies are necessary to realize more efficient and effective shipping performances. We4Sea joined the BICEPS Network with their online monitoring platform, to analyse and give feedback on the actual fuel consumption and GHG emissions of ships on trade lanes and give insights in the impact on whole logistics chains.
Dan Veen, Director, We4Sea, stated: “We are proud to connect to the BICEPS Network. We4Sea believes that parties involved in shipping should cooperate in creating a significant increase in the fuel efficiency of ships. As We4Sea we can support an active role of real-time vessel monitoring in fuel consumption and emissions in the shipping industry. Together we will look for the use in evaluating cost-effective implementation of innovations, and in performance-monitoring for the BICEPS Rating System.”
As far as Neogrid is concerned, the company is sponsoring the development of the BICEPS Rating System, an online survey that is rating freight carriers’ sustainable processes before they get contracted by shippers. The results of the survey are used in the shippers’ selection of ocean freight carriers.
“Supporting the BICEPS Rating System complements that we want to become pioneers in creating a measurable, win-win approach to sustainability in supply chain collaboration processes. By aligning operations, distribution and inventory replenishment to actual consumption, we automatically help companies be more sustainable by reducing overstocks that generate waste, whilst maintaining high availability to the end consumer at the same time.” Jay Moskowitz, COO, Neogrid Europe, concluded.
