November 25 is the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
Nautilus International has welcomed a new guide on how to combat violence against women as part of its support for the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November.
The 50-page guide has been launched by the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), and is designed to empower trade unions to take direct action against the worldwide problem.
The guide is fairly wide ranging and examines the enormity of the problem of violence towards women globally – including its manifestations in the form of trafficking, workplace violence, and female genital mutilation. It also records ITF-affiliated union campaigns to tackle it and includes a list of available further resources.
General secretary Mark Dickinson, said Nautilus is also committed to stamping out bullying and harassment in the maritime workplace, and had taken the lead on it in the industry with its information pack -Protect and Respect .
The bullying guidance had been drawn up in response to the Union own surveys and at the request of the Union’s women members, and with input from the Women’s Forum. It offers guidance on recognising and tackling bullying and harassment in the maritime workplace.
We know from our own research that many seafarers experience fulfilling careers at sea,’ said Mr Dickinson. However, there are some who experience bullying and harassment and never say anything about their experience because they think no-one will believe them, that they won’t get any support – or even that they might suffer reprisals.’Mr Dickinson urged seafarers not to let things get to crisis point.
Nautilus is here to support you in recognising and tackling the problem – starting with an informal chat about your options. If we work together, we can, and we will, stamp out bullying and harassment in our industry.’
