The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the World Maritime University (WMU) have introduced a new e-learning course focused on the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) Annex V, which addresses the prevention of pollution by garbage from ships.
As explained, the course is a timely and vital response to the growing global concern over marine litter, particularly plastic waste, which poses a significant threat to ocean health, marine biodiversity, global ecosystems, and human health. By equipping maritime professionals and relevant authorities with the knowledge and tools to understand and comply with MARPOL Annex V, the course aims to strengthen international efforts to eliminate ship-generated marine litter and promote environmental stewardship.
As we launch this specialized MARPOL Annex V course, I encourage maritime professionals worldwide to take this opportunity to deepen their understanding of pollution prevention measures and actively contribute to a more sustainable maritime industry. Each of us has a role to play
… said WMU President, Professor Maximo Q. Mejia Jr.
The course targets a diverse audience, including government officials, maritime educators, seafarers, port reception facility operators, and other key stakeholders. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of:
- The main provisions and scope of MARPOL Annex V
- Restrictions and conditions for the disposal of garbage at sea
- Responsibilities of shipowners operators, and crew in ensuring compliance
- The environmental impact of ship-generated waste
- International enforcement measures under the Convention
- Best practices to prevent, reduce, and control sea-based marine litter
By raising awareness and building capacity across the sector, the course contributes to reducing garbage discharge from ships and supports compliance with global environmental standards. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.
The course launch was announced during the seventy-fifth session of the IMO Technical Cooperation Committee (TC 75) in early June 2025 and is accessible free of charge after registration in the IMO E-learning portal.
