ABS and HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) have entered into a joint development project (JDP) to advance digital manufacturing automation in shipyards.
The partnership will focus on integrating smart technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, communication systems, and automation, into HMD’s shipbuilding operations. Leveraging ABS’s Guide for Smart Technologies for Shipyards, the initiative will identify areas for process improvement through hyper-connectivity, data-driven intelligence, and advanced automation.
The goal is to modernize shipyard practices while enhancing safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
Leaders from both organizations emphasized the transformative potential of these technologies. ABS Chairman Christopher J. Wiernicki highlighted how tools like digital twins, AI simulations, and augmented reality are redefining shipbuilding. HMD CEO Hyung Kwang Kim expressed hopes that the collaboration will set a global standard and streamline ship construction for both shipowners and regulators.
As part of the JDP, ABS may offer additional certifications such as Product Design Assessment or Manufacturing Assessment, provided the required standards are met. The partnership is expected to improve shipyard procedures and survey processes, delivering long-term benefits to both parties.
