NAPA provider of maritime software and data services, has released a simulation tool for predicting Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and modeling the impact of potential efficiency measures.
According to the company, using a ship’s digital twin and data on its past and current routes and performance, the tool predicts a ship’s CII rating for every sea passage or for any desired date during the year. It can simulate the effect of various energy efficiency measures and operational profiles on a vessel’s CII rating, such as weather routing or slow steaming.
As NAPA claims, the tool can also simulate the effects of installing energy-saving devices and cleaning the hull, providing more clarity on which measures will produce the best results.
The Executive Vice President of NAPA Shipping Solutions, Pekka Pakkanen, insisted on the central role of digital tools to help the industry work collaboratively and navigate the new paradigms of CII.
To make this collaboration happen in practice, they need a common platform where they can develop a shared understanding of how a vessel’s CII evolves throughout the year, and what can be done about it.

Commenting on the new development, Ossi Mettälä, Sales Manager at NAPA Shipping Solutions claimed that this new module carves a clear path towards CII compliance, bringing a much-needed fact-based picture of every ship’s performance.
‘NAPA has released a simulation tool for predicting a ship’s carbon emissions and modeling the impact of efficiency measures. Using a ship’s digital twin and past performance data, the tool can assess the effectiveness of measures such as weather routing and slow steaming. It can also evaluate the impact of energy-saving devices and cleaning the hull. This tool enables shipping companies to prioritize investments and work collaboratively to reduce their carbon footprint.
By providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of efficiency measures, this tool can empower shipping companies to work collaboratively and make informed decisions to reduce their environmental impact. Best of luck to NAPA from all about ship in their efforts to create a more sustainable future for the shipping industry.
