The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Mwani Qatar signed a container services agreement, in order to allow MSC’s transhipments, through the use of Hamad Port as a regional hub. Specifically, MSC will manage up to 150,000 TEUs per year and is estimated an upgrowth to one million TEUs until 2023.
The Minister of Transport and Communications and Board Chairman of Mwani Qatar, Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, witnessed the ceremony, while he welcomed the Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, Hassan Al Thawadi, and Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises at his headquarters.
Through the agreement, which starts in January 2020, MSC will be responsible for the transformation of Qatar into a vibrant regional trading hub.“The transshipment operations are of the added value services that the world’s hub ports seek to increase by attracting regular international shipping routes” said the Minister, Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti.
Furthermore, this partnership goals to benefit both of the companies, as it will boost the competitiveness between Qatar and Hamad Port and it will expand import and export operations.
The agreement will enable Hamad Port to become a transit station where the transport, loading and unloading of containers or cargo belonging to MSC will take place regionally, which their final destination will be to another port outside the State of Qatar.

Starting from the new year, Qatar’s strategic plans will advantage Hamad’s position and its role in the national economy, whereas these investments, give the chance to Qatar to be a step closer to “Qatar National Vision 2030”.
