After drifting for 23 days due to a main engine failure, the container ship Maersk Saltoro has completed its repairs and resumed its voyage to Nansha, China.
The vessel, which is transporting 1,353 refrigerated containers of exported Chilean cherries, is now expected to reach the Chinese port complex on February 17, depending on travel conditions. The Maersk Saltoro departed from Chile on December 27, 2024, and was originally scheduled to arrive in China on January 19, 2025. However, on January 13, the ship reported a technical problem with its main engine while en route.
Interestingly, Maersk Saltoro is a sister vessel to the MV Dali, which was involved in the Francis Scott Key Bridge incident. As described in the NTSB preliminary report, electrical breakers HR1 and LR1 unexpectedly opened when the vessel was three ship lengths from the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the first blackout to all shipboard lighting and most equipment.
