MSC is considering the use of hydrogen and fuels derived from it as a potential fuel source for the future for container shipping.
Talking about decarbonization at the Maritime Transport Efficiency Conference in Geneva, MSC Group’s Bud Darr informed that the company was also pioneering the use of biofuels within its existing fleet.
Specifically, Mr. Darr said that a range of alternative fuels is necessary urgently. Currently, LNG remains a transitional option, with carbon capture and storage, potentially considered a useful option.
In addition, MSC noted that collaborations have accelerated the development of clean hydroge. However, there are still challenged to overcome, such as density, volume and safe handling.
To solve these problems, MSC believes that an injection of energy and capital into R&D efforts will bring alternative fuels and alternative propulsion technologies to the marketplace.
