Mr Tiwari has been missing since 2011 – other crew released after 33 months in captivity
Chirag Bahri, MPHRP Regional Director South Asia, met with the family members of Chief Officer Dheeraj Tiwari in Delhi. Mr Tiwari has been missing from the ship, MV Iceberg 1 since 2011. The vessel was hijacked by Somali pirates in March 2010 and the crew members were released in December 2012 after suffering a painful ordeal of 33 months in captivity.
The family was provided with humanitarian support by Mr Bahri on behalf of MPHRP and assured of continuing assistance as required. For a number of years, MPHRP has assisted with financial support, counselling and medical help to the family.
The Government of India, along with maritime unions, has also extended support to the family of Mr Tiwari. Mr Bahri also offered medical counselling for the family members which the family has readily accepted. He also advised the family to be cautious of individuals who can make false promises to lure the family and extract money from them on the promise of finding details of their missing son in Somalia.
The father thanked MPHRP for standing beside them throughout this difficult period of their lives and praised the efforts of Mr Roy Paul and Mr Bahri in helping them.MPHRP is thankful to all its funders and partners for being able to assist MPHRP in providing humanitarian support to those affected by maritime piracy.
