A cargo vessel, which was reportedly carrying 600 tons of coal, capsized in Passur channel of Mongla port, with seven crew members onboard
According to local media sources, on 15th November, MV Fardin-1 capsized in Passur channel after colliding with the foreign merchant ship Handipark, around 9:30pm at Mongla port’s Harbaria-9 point.
Following the incident, a rescue team of Bangladesh Coast Guard members managed to recover the bodies of two crew members, out of five, who went missing. Still, the three other crew members are missing, as sources told to local media agencies.
What is more, two other sailors swam ashore immediately after the vessel’s collision.
Lt Khandaker Munif Taki, media officer of Coast Guard HQ, said they are continuing operations to rescue the missing crew.
For the records, MV Fardin-1, the lighter (shallow-draft boat or barge) vessel, was not authorized to carry coal, Commander Sheikh Fakhruddin, harbour master and acting secretary of the Mongla Port Authority, said on Wednesday.
As a result, Mongla Port Authority will take legal action against the owner of the bulkhead ship.
