TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) yesterday announced that AKARI, the world’s second pure battery tanker, completed its first bunkering operation in Kawasaki on April 14.
Large-capacity lithium-ion batteries on the ASAHI and AKARI, both owned and operated by Asahi Tanker, power every phase of their operations, including cargo handling, berthing/unberthing, and navigation. According to MOL, this results in zero emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the vessel.
MOL and Asahi Tanker will continue bunkering using electric powered tankers with the aim of reducing their GHG emissions. Last April, ASAHI – the world’s first pure battery tanker to operate completely on electricity – bunkered fuel on the MOL-operated car carrier Victorious Ace at the Daikoku Pier C-1 Wharf in Yokohama.
