Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping ‘Makarov University’ during a meeting held in St.Petersburg, the Russian Federation, on Wednesday, June 5, 2019. The MoU boosts MOL’s aim to be one of the leading shipping companies in the Northern Sea Route operation, as the company understands that one key for its success is having seafarers especially well-trained for the NSR operation.
Specifically, the MoU boosts and develops the partnership between the two organizations in relation to the training of seafarers, mostly in the field of Northern Sea Route operations.
Firstly, since MOL has been operating icebreaking LNG carriers for the Yamal LNG project that sails through the NSR, its crew has developed its expertise on polar water training courses for navigation officers and cold climate survival training course at the Makarov Training Centre, which is a part of Makarov University.
Secondly, the Makarov training centre is one of the globe’s leading training establishments in polar waters and ice navigation simulator training.
In addition, MOL has also commenced the recruiting cadets of Makarov University, who are trained onboard vessels operated by MOL, with the future goal to be the master or chief engineer on MOL fleet vessels.
Concluding, MOL continues its contribution on further growing the Russian maritime industry, by recruiting promising seafarers from the younger generation.
