Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced that its subsidiary, MOL Energia Pte. Ltd., signed a time charter contract with CSSA Chartering and Shipping Services SA, a subsidiary of TotalEnergies, for two dual-fuel very large gas carriers (VLGCs).
According to a statement released by a MOL, these vessels, to be built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in South Korea and delivered in 2026, can operate on both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and conventional heavy oil.
As informed by MOL, utilizing LPG significantly reduces emissions, cutting CO2 by about 20% and sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) by about 90%. The ships are also equipped to transport ammonia, a potential clean energy source.
During the 2023 GREEN4SEA Athens Forum, Nikos Xydas, Technical Director of the World LPG Association, highlighted that LPG as a marine fuel is a better choice among the other fuel options from a well-to-wake perspective.
This partnership strengthens the existing relationship between MOL and TotalEnergies, which includes various long-term contracts for LNG carriers and bunkering vessels.
