Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced the delivery of the LNG-fueled car carrier, Cerulean ACE, on March 13 at the Onishi Shipyard of Shin Kurushima Dockyard Co., Ltd.
This vessel is the first of 11 to be built in Japan under the “BLUE” series and will transport cars, including those manufactured by Mazda Motor Corporation. MOL plans to operate 14 new LNG-fueled car carriers, with the CERULEAN ACE being the inaugural vessel.
The use of LNG fuel in these carriers results in significant environmental benefits, including a reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about 25-30%, sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions by about 98%, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by about 85% compared to vessels using conventional fuel oil.
The decision to adopt LNG fuel underscores MOL’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint in maritime transportation. This initiative aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change and improve air quality in the shipping industry.
