Conducting Global Review in South Wales as well as across the UK
The Mission to Seafarers is currently conducting a Global Review of maritime welfare service provision to seafarers, in South Wales as well as across the UK.
Significant change is taking place within the shipping industry with a consequent impact on ports. The Mission must ensure that it has the right resources in the right ports, that it delivers its charitable aims effectively and that it is offering the right support to seafarers with a focus on where the need is greatest.
In the light of changes it has been decided, after extensive consultation, that The Mission to Seafarers’ centre in Cardiff will close. However, a full chaplaincy and ship-visiting service will be maintained. Seafarers visiting Cardiff will still be offered the help and support they require from South Wales port chaplain Revd Nick Jones and his team of volunteers. The Mission furthermore is pleased to announce that it plans to retain its current seafarers’ centre facility in Newport, invest in a much improved centre in Port Talbot, and retain a full chaplaincy service covering ports from Newport through to Swansea.
The Mission to Seafarers’ Secretary General, Revd Andrew Wright, said “The decision to close a centre is always hard, especially for those who have valued these facilities over many years. Such decisions are never taken lightly. We are deeply grateful to those supporters and friends who have volunteered their time and given generously in supporting the Cardiff centre, and the seafarers who have used it.
