The Argentine navy informed that it is investigating if a “metallic contact” that was found during a sonar search corresponds to the ARA San Juan submarine, which went missing last month, with 44 crew members on board.
Specifically, the Argentine navy mentioned that they have found a new object, at a depth of 3,100 feet (950 meters).
Last week, the navy had found another object, which, as it turned out, did not belong to the missing submarine, but it was a wreck of a fishing vessel, navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said.
He continued by saying that, although, the multinational search operation is still ongoing, the navy is not looking for survivors, because the hostile environment and the time that has passed makes the discovery of survivors not plausible.
In November, the Argentinian navy informed that an explosion was detected near the area that the submarine went missing.
Recent information indicated that the ‘San Juan’ was returning from a routine mission to Ushuaia, when it was ordered back to its Mar del Plata base, after reporting water ingress through its snorkel. The water caused the battery short circuit, navy spokesman Enrique Balbi was quoted as saying by Reuters.
