Mental Health Support Solutions warns that the recent surge in attacks on merchant ships by Yemen’s Houthis, utilizing explosive drone boats, has raised significant concerns regarding maritime security and the mental health of seafarers.
Seafarers, who are essential to global trade, face immense stress and anxiety due to the fear of imminent attacks, exacerbated by the isolation and confinement of their work environment. Watkins emphasized the potential for severe psychological distress, including anxiety, depression, and PTSD among these individuals.
Charles Watkins, Clinical Psychologist and CEO of Mental Health Support Solutions, highlighted the severe psychological toll these unpredictable and dangerous attacks have on seafarers. Furthermore, he urged for immediate international action to enhance maritime security and provide comprehensive mental health resources to support seafarers.
Watkins called on shipping companies to prioritize the mental health of their crews by offering regular psychological support and ensuring safe working conditions.
He also appealed to governments and international bodies to strengthen efforts to secure maritime routes and address these violent tactics. The mental wellbeing of seafarers is crucial for their health and the smooth operation of global trade, and should be a primary concern amid these increasing threats.
In healthcare, if you’re visibly injured, people will immediately offer assistance and care. However, when someone is struggling emotionally, like feeling depressed, we often accept a superficial response of ‘I’m fine’ without further inquiry or support.
