On September 8th, Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, died peacefully at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years. The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change. In a tribute to Her Majesty, several maritime stakeholders are expressing their condolences.
Her Majesty’s dedication and service will continue to inspire everyone and will always be remembered, said IMO in a statement. UK Chamber of Shipping mentioned that the Chamber has a strong connection with the royal family having been granted a Royal Charter back in 1920.
President Graham Westgarth said: “On behalf of the UK shipping community I pay tribute to Her Majesty’s lifetime of selfless service. At this moment of national sadness I extend the Chamber’s deepest sympathies to the entire Royal Family and especially to King Charles III as he begins his reign by leading the nation’s mourning.
The Chamber has also been fortunate to have hosted Her Majesty for which we were always grateful, the most recent being in 1994 when she opened the Chamber’s new premises.
In addition, the Chairman of the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) paid tribute stating that Her Majesty ”was truly the anchor around which the nation has stayed safely moored regardless of which way the tide flowed”
HM Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning British monarch and Master of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets.
Andrew Cassels, Chairman of the MNWB which is the umbrella charity for the UK Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets that provides support to seafarers, fishermen and their dependents, said:
“It is with the deepest sadness that we learned of the Queen’s passing. She reigned for a glorious 70 years during which time the country has seen considerable change. She has been described as a rock, the foundations upon which our nation has grown.”
For the Merchant Navy, she was truly the anchor around which the nation has stayed safely moored regardless of which way the tide flowed. God bless the queen; long live the King.
We send our sincere and deepest condolences to the Royal Family as they mourn the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
