ClassNK has issued Technical Information to provide detailed content on the amendments and specific procedures to follow in order to comply with the requirements for mandatory installation of stability instrument for oil tankers, chemical tankers and gas carriers
The amendments of applicable international convention and codes stipulating mandatory installation of stability instruments for oil tankers, chemical tankers, and gas carriers were adopted at MEPC 66 and will enter into force on January 1st, 2016.
Contents of the amendments All oil tankers, chemical tankers, and gas carriers are to be fitted with a stability instrument, capable of verifying compliance with intact and damage stability requirements approved by the Administration by the date designated in applicable convention or codes. Details on each applicable ship and the designated date for application of the amendments are summarized in Table below. |

A stability instrument already fitted on a ship before 1 January 2016 (in the case of a gas carrier to which IGC Code applies, 1 July 2016) need not be replaced, provided it is capable of verifying compliance with intact and damage stability to the satisfaction of the Administration
The following ships should comply with the requirement for the installation of a stability instrument for if loaded:
- Ships which are on a dedicated service, with a limited number of permutations of loading such that all anticipated conditions have been approved both in the stability information and the damage stability calculation provided to the master
- Ships where stability verification is made remotely by a means approved by the Administration
- Ships which are loaded within an approved range of loading conditions .
- Ships constructed before 1 January 2016 (in case of gas carriers, 1 July 2016) provided with approved limiting KG/GM curves covering all applicable intact and damage stability requirements
