Palumbo Malta Shipyard has secured a €6 million international contract to equip scrubbers to three ro-ro passenger ferries, ahead of the 2020 sulphur cap regulation. The contract regards the conversion of existing spaces on the ships, as well as underwater modification.
Speaking on the occasion, shipyard general manager Joseph Calleja said that the upcoming IMO regulations have created a new niche for the company.

According to the agreement, the contract regards the retrofit of scrubbers to three 200-metre long, conversion existing spaces, all electrical works and updated fire-fighting, illumination and safety systems.
In addition, the works cover underwater modification, new sea-chests, and a new pump room created of dedicated huge pumps.
The shipyard hopes to achieve a fast turnaround of the job and each of these vessels can be retrofitted within 30 days.
What is more, Joseph Calleja said that this kind of projects put Malta on the map.
