Malaysia detained a tanker for the second time in a year due to illegal anchoring. The ship was firstly arrested in December 20.
More specifically, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), arrested the Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged ship on July 3rd.
The ship was arrested for illegal anchoring in Eastern Johor. At its first detention, the ship was fined $12,000.
Commenting on the arrest, MMEA noted that these arrests indicate that there are “stubborn ships, trying to challenge state laws.”
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has introduced the ‘Operation Jangkar Haram’, in an effort to spot illegally-anchored vessels.
The Jangkar Haram operation urges merchant ship owners to seek permission to anchor in the eastern waters of Johor (South China Sea). Failure to do so it is reported, will result in them being ordered out of the area.
