Various Japanese shipping companies have initiated the provision of marine data to the Japan Coast Guard (JCG), eliminating the need for manual integration by the JCG.
According to K Line, the data, sourced from monitoring systems on merchant vessels operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and “K” LINE, is now shared through the Ship IoT data sharing platform, IoS Open Platform (IoS-OP), managed by Ship Data Center Co., Ltd.
Historically, the JCG relied on voluntary data submissions from MOL, NYK, and “K” LINE, which were then integrated manually. With IoS-OP, data from around five hundred ships operated by these companies is aggregated, creating one of the world’s largest ships IoT databases.
This advancement aims for the comprehensive supply of detailed operational data, enhancing the JCG’s ability to improve tidal current prediction accuracy. The utilization of this extensive dataset is expected to significantly contribute to marine safety and operational efficiency for the Japan Coast Guard.
In celebration of centralized management of marine data, a ceremony was held on January 26th with the attendance of relevant stakeholders.
In an exclusive interview to SAFETY4SEA, Andrew Roberts, Executive Director, EMEA, RightShip, had highlighted the importance of data sharing and increased transparency for enhanced safety culture, both onboard and ashore. According to Roberts, data sharing also helps organization to choose the proper decarbonization initiatives and they can be held accountable for cases of crew abandonment.
