A consortium of seven major industry players collaborated for the construction of a ‘power-to-methanol’ demonstration plant at the Port of Antwerp.
Specifically, Engie, Fluxys, Indaver, Inovyn, Oiltanking, Port of Antwerp and the PMV – investment company of the Flemish Government worked together for the project’s establishment.
What is more, the consortium will focus on the sustainable methanol production as an raw material used by industry in the Port.
The project’s construction at the INOVYN site in Antwerp is estimated to begin by 2022, with the aim of producing 8000 tonnes of sustainable methanol per year, thus avoiding at least an equivalent volume of CO2 emissions.
This methanol will be produced from captured CO2 and sustainably generated hydrogen. The carbon dioxide is captured by means of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU), through which CO2 emissions are partially recovered and then combined with hydrogen generated on the basis of green energy produced from renewable electricity.
…Port of Antwerp commented.
Concluding, the main goal of the project is to replace fossil raw materials with sustainably produced methanol.
