Maersk has issued a comprehensive update regarding its operations in response to the structural failure of Baltimore’s Key Bridge.
In particular, Maersk has urged customers with import cargo currently at discharge ports in Newark, Norfolk, and Philadelphia to arrange for the prompt pickup of their containers. This proactive measure aims to assist with managing increased container flows and optimizing port operations during this challenging period.
Following the collapse of the Key Bridge, the vessel owner has invoked General Average (GA), a standard procedure in the maritime industry. Maersk has promptly informed customers with cargo aboard the affected vessel, the Dali, to notify their cargo insurer of the GA declaration. Maersk is committed to cooperating with all relevant parties throughout this process to ensure a smooth resolution.
In response to the port disruption, the Baltimore Captain of the Port has opened two temporary alternate channels for “commercially essential vessels.” However, these channels are not suitable for deep-draft oceangoing container vessels typically used by Maersk and other major carriers. Although reports suggest a third alternate channel may open later in April to accommodate larger vessels, details are pending confirmation by the Baltimore Captain of the Port via Unified Command.
While Maersk temporarily suspends new bookings into or out of the Port of Baltimore, the company remains committed to serving the greater Baltimore area through alternative ports such as Newark, Norfolk, and Philadelphia via road and rail transport, subject to available capacity.
We understand your need for clarity on your cargo, as well as future changes to our routes regarding Baltimore. We are working diligently to identify solutions and will inform you as soon as possible of changes to current and future cargo to Baltimore.
