Reports mention that Maersk signs deal for LNG dual-fuel vessels in its expansion efforts. Maersk officials have yet to confirm the orders.
After Maersk’s announcement regarding the ongoing fleet renewal strategy back in August, Greece’s Xclusiv Shipbrokers revealed in a recent report that the company signed the agreement at New Times Shipbuilding with the option to order up to twelve 16,000 teu ships.
Maersk had admitted on their announcement that it would proceed with orders for ships which can use bio-LNG, a fuel that the company has previously dismissed. This strategy aims to ensure that the new dual-fuel vessels will provide greenhouse gas emissions reductions in this decade.
The ships are due for delivery in 2028, costing $200m per unit as reported. The company has been in the process of signing newbuilding orders and contracts for dual-fuel vessels with the renewal pace reaching 160,000 teu per year.
