On July 2013, Australian Navigation Act 2012 will enter into force
The Australian Navigation Act 2012 enters into force on July 1, 2013. Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has issued Marine Notice No. 8/2013 providing information for foreign flag vessels operating in Australian waters.
Lloyd’s Register has issued relevant classification news No 13/2013 providing a flowchart with details for those vessels which fall under the new Act.
One important change to the current arrangements is that all foreign flag vessels operating in Australian waters will become subject to the Navigation Act. This means that they will also be subject to port state control which is not currently the case for those vessels under state or territory jurisdiction.
Owners and operators are advised of this important change in order to prepare themselves for the revised legislative structure.
