During the ceremony of the “2018 AMSC of the Year Award” which has held on 10 December in Niantic, Connecticut, the members of the Long Island Sound Area Maritime Security Committee earned the above-mentioned award and recognized as nation’s best. The award identify members’ significant contributions to the security of the nation’s Marine Transportation System.
With the Maritime Transportation Security Act coming into effect after 9/11, the establishment of the AMSCs was a requirement. The 14 AMSCs aim to boost the communication among federal, state and local agencies in order to enhance a safety culture environment in the maritime community.
Being named as the AMSC of the Year, means that all members are responsible for the region’s maritime safety and security, as it further demands hard work and long hours by many parties.
The Area Maritime Security Committee was established to capitalize on skillsets, resources and authorities of multiple agencies to keep our homeland safe through cooperation and communication.
…Capt. Kevin Reed, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound commander noted.
For the records the Long Island Sound AMSC is headed by Capt. Kevin Reed, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound commander, and is co-chaired by Bill Hackett, Connecticut Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security Emergency Management Director, and Bill Cullen, New York Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Director of Security.
It takes great collaboration amongst several entities to mitigate the threats to our ports and waterways. This award is indicative of the hard and successful work that our law enforcement, first responders, emergency managers and civilian partners have devoted to this area of responsibility. I am incredibly humbled to work with them.
