The London Port Authority (LPA) issued a statement informing that they join the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the fight for more diversity and equality in the male-dominant shipping industry.
Through a twitter post, London Port Authority stated
Also, following March 8 as the International Women’s Day, the IMO’s gender programme announced launch of a photo search to build its bank of images of women in maritime. The move came as IMO believes the media have a great potential to promote gender equality by portraying women and men in a non-stereotypical, diverse and balanced manner.
Women in shipping has been an ongoing fight, with IMO and key shipping organizations leading the path towards a more equal sector. Consequently, at the 120th session of its Council meeting in London, IMO selected the “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community” as the World Maritime Day theme for 2019, in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of gender equality, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
