Work is underway on Peel Ports 300M Liverpool2 project
Work is underway on Peel Ports’ 300M Liverpool2 project at the Royal Seaforth Container Terminal which is on target to host large post-Panamax ships, accommodating two vessels of up to 13 500TEU at a time. The current capacity is 4000TEU.
The development is due for completion in 2015 and coincides with the widening of the Panama Canal in Central America to allow larger ships to transit. The Panama Canal’s current allowance is 5000TEU ships. A new lane of traffic is to be created along the canal via a third set of locks, a US$5.25bn project, which will allow more and larger ships of up to 13 000TEU to transit through. Liverpool2 will be able to handle 95% of the world’s container fleet once it has opened.
Bernard Molloy, chairman of the Liverpool SuperPort committee, said a second phase of the Liverpool2 project will be able to host even larger ships.
He commented: ‘From 2015, Liverpool will be able to handle some of the world’s largest ships which means we will be able to bring vessels in from China and across Asia. Mexico is also set to become a major shipper, particularly for the engineering sector, while the widening of the Panama Canal will also open up trade opportunities from further afield.’
