In a bid to mitigate pollution and adopt green practices, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) plans installation of two ultra-modern diesel electric cranes at the Port of Mombasa, mid next year.
Speaking at a media workshop in Mombasa on Monday, KPA Managing Director Catherine Mturi-Wairi revealed that the cost of the equipment was USD8.7 million.
The cranes will have a dust control system, providing dust and spillage-free unloading, while they will be able to handle two vessels at a time, Mrs. Mturi-Wairi was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency.
This is in line with KPA’s plan to set port of Mombasa as a global leader in port environmental compliance and sustainability, through adoption of a green port policy. This includes also adoption of latest technologies.
Mrs. Mturi-Wairi also revealed plans to develop small ports along the coastline and also inland waterways such as Shimoni in South Coast and Kisumu in West Kenya.
