The “CAPE HAYATE,” a 210,000-dwt capesize bulker fuelled by LNG, has been delivered to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K Line) after construction at the Tsu shipyard of Japan Marine United Co., Ltd.
According to the company, this vessel marks a significant milestone for K Line as it’s their first capesize bulk carrier equipped with a dual-fuel diesel engine running primarily on LNG. To further enhance environmental sustainability, K Line plans to install the “Seawing,” an automated kite system utilizing wind power, on the vessel.
The “CAPE HAYATE” will be utilized for carrying steel raw materials for JFE Steel Corporation under a long-term consecutive voyage charter contract. This move aligns with K Line’s goal of contributing to carbon-free marine transportation in its customers’ supply chains.
As part of their Environmental Vision 2050, K Line has set ambitious targets to improve CO2 emissions efficiency by 50% by 2030 compared to 2008 levels, surpassing IMO standards. Looking ahead to 2050, the company aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
They plan to achieve these goals through continued efforts to introduce new fuels with low environmental impact and by adhering to their established targets.
