Israel has recently implemented national regulations aimed at preventing sewage pollution, aligning with the guidelines set forth in the IMO MARPOL ANNEX IV regulations.
In light of this development, Harpaz P&I, a NorthStandard club correspondent, has provided an update on Israel’s new sewage regulations. Given that most international shipping already adheres to annex IV regulations, the adoption of these regulations in Israel is not expected to have significant implications for ships calling at Israeli ports.
However, one notable change is that as of June 27, 2024, all of Israel’s ports and terminals must furnish shore reception facilities for sewage, upon request by ships, provided that a 24-hour notice is given prior to the vessel’s arrival at an Israeli port.
Further to the requirements of annex IV, the discharge of treated sewage into the sea in Israeli’s ports limits is not allowed.
